Springing forward

Time is flying, spring is coming, and we are super energized by all of the new faces coming through our doors! We’re working hard to keep this momentum up and are so grateful for all of the people that have helped us get to where are. If you’re reading this, thank you.

There are two opportunities in March that we definitely don’t want you to miss out on. The first is a series of ✹ FREE ✹ Open Level Ballet Classes with Tuli Bera of Ballet Unboxed. The focus of this programming is to create a welcoming space for learning, community, and discovery, while removing the traditional pressures of a fixed outcome.

• Session 1: Tuesday, March 10th, 10am-12:30pm → Register (FULL)

• Session 2: Sunday, March 15th, 1-3:30pm → Register (FULL)

• Session 3: Tuesday, March 17th, 10am-12:30pm → Register

• Session 4: Sunday, March 22nd, 1-3:30pm → Register

• Session 5: Tuesday, March 24th, 10am-12:30pm → Register

• Session 6: Sunday, March 29th, 1-3:30pm → Register

The second is that we’re running a ✹ SPRING BREAK SPECIAL ✹ for our dance studios → $10/hr all day (morning through evening) on Monday, March 23rd through Friday, March 27th. This deal is for private rentals with 1-8 people only (no use of aerial hook). Visit our website to book.

Iron Orchid Muay Thai with Ardarius (AD) Blakely

It’s hard to believe we’ve been hosting Iron Orchid Muay Thai for a whole year already. They’ve been offering a wide range of programming in both our event space and our dance studios, demonstrating the true versatility of our facilities. You can see the strength of their programming in their clientele, who always show up with a positive attitude and dedication to their practice.

Who is Iron Orchid Muay Thai?

Iron Orchid is the martial arts branch of the black and queer owned arts company, Onyx Iklwa. Iron Orchid aims to cultivate collective liberation through creating accessible and community focused classes on swordfighting, kickboxing, and self defense. We focus on styles founded by people of color that were historically used in liberation, and proved to be effective forms of both self defense and fitness!

Tell us about how Iron Orchid Muay Thai got started.

After the event of the forced closure of a local kickboxing studio, Coach AD Blakely, with the support of community members, came together to found Iron Orchid just about a year ago. Iron Orchid was created not only in an effort to keep the community together, but also to give people who want to begin or continue their martial arts journey a home. We are a martial arts studio that puts ego aside and art first. Learning a martial art can be intimidating no matter when you decide to start. Our goal is to make the process not only educational, but most importantly, fun! All of our classes are family and beginner friendly, except our Tuesday advanced class.

What has it meant to hold programming at Movement on Montrose?

We celebrate this first birthday of Iron Orchid with high hopes for the future and much excitement for its continued growth. One of the key pieces of keeping Iron Orchid alive has been the support of Movement on Montrose. Holding our programs at MoM means the absolute world to us. MoM allows us to bring liberation arts closer to the community by allowing us to focus on community driven classes that speak directly to all the things that we as Chicagoans face daily. We aim to build a sense of self-confidence, self-autonomy, unity, and empathy! We encourage anyone looking for a different kind of martial arts experience, to come and check us out.

Same Day Bookings!

You can now use our booking platform to make same-day studio reservations! We’ve also made large group bookings available online. We’re constantly trying to make this process more simple and efficient for our clients and appreciate your patience as we continue to make adjustments.

March 15th: Buddhism Service from 11:15am-1:30pm | Nichiren Shu Sangha of Chicago will host their monthly service with Reverend Igarashi. Free and open to the public, donations welcome.

March 22nd: Dance Social from 5-8pm | Desueño Dance is back this month for their Salsa, Bachata, and ChaCha Dance Party! Register here.

March 24th: Shodaigyo Meditation from 7-8:15pm | Join Nichiren Shu Sangha of Chicago for their monthly meditation session. Free and open to the public, donations welcome.
