Who is Dance Avondale?
Dance Avondale was founded in 2017 out of the recognition that access to dance on Chicago’s north side was limited by cost, leaving many families, especially those from lower and middle-income households, without opportunity. Its founder and Executive Director, Alia Montijo (“Ms. Alia”), understands that service in her field of passion is her life’s mission. Establishing Dance Avondale is the way to live that mission: through service to the community, through education, and through dance as a transformative vehicle for healing and growth.
What does it mean for Dance Avondale to be at MoM?
This transition marked a new chapter, allowing the school to serve more families while staying rooted in the working-class neighborhoods of Chicago’s north side. Since the move, enrollment has grown by more than 30%, and Dance Avondale has established new adult programs: a family-centered fitness series supporting new and returning mothers, a burlesque program that uplifts body positivity and self-love, and a free candlelight yoga series that creates solidarity and healing through community practice. These offerings, like every program at Dance Avondale, are rooted in the belief that movement is transformative and that access to dance should never be out of reach.
