We first worked with Laina last summer when she curated a small works exhibition in our space and she’ll be back for her second exhibition, titled Lyrical Joy, this January. Below is a brief introduction to her practice as both an artist and curator, and we look forward to seeing you at the Opening Reception on Saturday, January 24th from 6-8pm.
Laina Joy is a self-taught artist and curator in Chicago. Her art career spans over 25 years, showcasing works in galleries in Chicago, Detroit, and New York City. Her art is inspired by people in her life, social events, pop culture, as well as an admiration of the abstract. She uses layering of bright colors and bold lines to draw attention to her subject, enticing viewers to see each layer upon a closer look. Laina Joy strives to promote artists within the city and encourages businesses to share their space with artists. She works in partnership with Akili Sosa, creator of Artscope.io, a purchasing platform for businesses to use to streamline selling art directly off the walls.
She has upcoming group and solo artist showcases at Royal Grocer and Co (Bucktown), Twisted Scissors (Avondale), and Paulie Gee's in Logan Square.
