We're super excited to be the Albany Park host site for Camp Flight this summer! This enriching summer experience is organized by L.O.T.U.S. and will feature our fellow collaborators Iron Orchid Muay Thai and Dance Avondale. Camp runs June 8th through August 21st for children grades 2nd - 8th. Registration details below.
Who is L.O.T.U.S. and what is Camp Flight?
L.O.T.U.S. (Lifting Ourselves Through US) is a Chicago-based 501(c)(3) organization that develops young people and families through education, mentorship, and community partnership. Our work focuses on helping youth understand themselves, build healthy habits, and explore real-world pathways that connect their interests to meaningful careers and a strong quality of life. Camp Flight is our summer experience designed as a “flight” of opportunities — a sampling of hands-on pathways where youth discover what sparks their curiosity. Each week introduces participants to fields such as STEAM, culinary arts, filmmaking, entrepreneurship, fitness, and more. The goal is simple: help young people see possibilities, build confidence, and take their next smart step in life.
How did your group begin and what has it meant to your community?
L.O.T.U.S. began as a grassroots effort rooted in a simple belief: communities already hold the wisdom and talent needed to support their young people — they simply need structures that bring that energy together. Over time, that belief grew into programming that places community members in meaningful roles as instructors, mentors, and partners. One of the things we are most proud of is that our growth has been organic. The program has expanded through relationships with families, schools, and local professionals who want to share their skills with the next generation. For the community, it has meant more than programming. It has meant jobs for local residents, exposure for young people who may not otherwise see certain careers up close, and a space where families feel welcomed and connected.
What does it mean to be holding programming at Movement on Montrose this summer?
Movement on Montrose has been an incredible partner and host. The space brings together health, creativity, and community in a way that aligns beautifully with our mission, and they are part of the Logan family so it's great to work together to increase the impact. Holding Camp Flight there will allow young people to learn in an environment that feels open, energetic, and inspiring. It also places them in a setting where movement, wellness, and exploration are part of the daily rhythm. That kind of atmosphere encourages youth to stay curious, try new things, and see themselves as capable of growth in many different directions.
